What is the difference between MM and MC cartridges?

Both use electromagnetic induction to convert the vibrations of the record into electrical audio signals.

MM stands for “Moving Magnet” and is the most commonly used type of cartridge. Small magnets are placed on the cantilever, which move within fixed coils during playback.

MC stands for “Moving Coil” and is preferred by audiophiles for its higher precision. Tiny coils are placed on the cantilever, and a specialized MC preamp is required.
